AI agents can reduce manual work, accelerate everyday tasks and free employees to focus on higher-value work. But deploying the technology is only the first step. Enterprise-wide AI agent adoption requires a culture of continuous learning, experimentation and change. Employees need to understand how to use AI agents, see their value and feel supported in making them part of their daily work.
Deloitte’s 2026 State of AI in the Enterprise research found that access to sanctioned AI tools grew by 50% during the past year, reaching around 60% of workers. Yet out of those employees with access, fewer than 60% of employees use these tools in their daily workflows.
The challenge is turning access into adoption. Organizations must make the use of AI agents relevant, rewarding and easy to incorporate into everyday work. That means demonstrating tangible benefits, building practical skills, establishing trust and recognizing the behaviors that drive adoption.
Here are five best practices for building an AI-agent-ready workforce.
1. Show Employees What’s in It for Them
Employees are more likely to adopt AI agents when they see how the technology makes their jobs easier. Start with familiar tasks and tangible benefits rather than abstract promises of AI transformation.
Show employees how AI agents can reduce repetitive work, accelerate information gathering and ease everyday workloads.
- Start with real problems: Identify tedious, time-consuming tasks where AI agents can make a meaningful difference.
- Demonstrate the benefits: For instance, an HR AI agent could answer routine questions, send reminders and track paperwork, freeing HR teams to spend less time chasing tasks and more time supporting new hires.
- Share success stories: Highlight practical examples and employee testimonials that demonstrate time saved, improved workflows or better outcomes.
The message is simple: AI agents should help employees do their jobs better, not create more work or leave them wondering how the technology benefits them.
2. Make AI Agent Use Part of Your Corporate Culture
Access doesn’t guarantee adoption. Employees may stick to familiar habits because they don’t know where to start, how to access approved AI agents or whether using them is encouraged.
Leaders must make AI agents’ use visible, normal and worthwhile.
- Lead by example: Encourage leaders and managers to demonstrate how they use AI agents in their own work.
- Make learning social: Create opportunities for employees to share tips, practical examples and lessons with colleagues.
- Make time to experiment: Encourage employees to try approved AI agents on everyday tasks, without expecting every experiment to succeed.
- Recognize progress: Celebrate practical improvements and useful new behaviors.
Culture changes when employees see colleagues benefit from AI agents and know their efforts to adopt new ways of working are supported and recognized.
3. Make Learning Easy and Practical
Employees don’t need to become AI experts. They need to know which AI agents are available, what they can do and how to evaluate and use their outputs effectively.
A July 2025 Gartner® survey of 2,986 employees found that 65% were excited about using AI at work, but only 42% said they knew how to identify where AI could improve their work.
Organizations must turn that interest into practical skills.
- Offer role-specific training: Show employees how AI agents can support tasks relevant to their roles, such as preparing customer briefings, summarizing sales information or managing HR onboarding tasks.
- Provide quick-start guides: Make it easy to find approved AI agents, understand their capabilities and get started without extensive training.
- Build learning into the workday: Use short demonstrations, peer coaching and hands-on exercises to help employees learn by doing.
- Make support accessible: Give employees a clear place to turn when they have questions or need help incorporating AI agents into their daily workflows.
The goal is to make learning practical, accessible and immediately applicable to employees’ work.
4. Build Trust With Clear Rules and Support
Employees won’t use AI agents confidently if they don’t know which tools are approved, what information they can share or how to assess the reliability of an AI agent’s outputs.
Clear rules, human oversight and accessible support make responsible AI use easier.
Deloitte’s 2026 research found that only 21% of surveyed organizations had a mature governance model for agentic AI.
Organizations can help close this gap by making responsible use clear and actionable.
- Clarify the rules: Explain which AI agents are approved, what data employees can share and which actions require human review or approval.
- Show employees how to verify results: For instance, a knowledge management AI agent might retrieve company policies and link to authoritative documents. Employees should know how to check its answers and when to consult a subject-matter expert.
- Make it safe to report mistakes: Encourage employees to raise concerns and report unexpected results without fear of blame. Identify the appropriate contact, whether that’s IT, an AI support team or a designated AI champion.
- Provide clear escalation paths: Make it easy for employees to get help when an agent produces an incorrect answer, behaves unexpectedly, or raises a security or compliance concern.
Clear guardrails give employees the confidence to use AI agents responsibly without guessing what’s permitted.
5. Make Managers Champions of Adoption
Managers shape how employees respond to new technology. They influence priorities, team habits, and the time available for learning and experimentation.
To drive AI agent adoption, managers must do more than encourage employees. They need to model effective use, address barriers and reinforce the behaviors that make adoption stick.
- Demonstrate everyday use: A sales manager could show how an AI agent summarizes pipeline changes and prepares a first draft of a quarterly business review.
- Make adoption a regular conversation: Ask which AI agents employees are using, what’s working and where they need support.
- Remove barriers: Address limited access, unclear guidance, workflow issues or insufficient time to learn.
- Recognize effective use: Celebrate employees who apply AI agents effectively and share their experiences with colleagues.
When managers consistently reinforce these behaviors, AI agent use becomes part of the team’s normal routine rather than an optional experiment.
In Summary: From Access to Everyday Adoption
Building an AI-agent-ready workforce doesn’t mean turning every employee into an AI expert. It means giving people the tools, skills, confidence and encouragement to use AI agents effectively in their daily work.
Use the following checklist to turn the five best practices into action:
- Demonstrate value: Identify practical use cases that solve real employee problems.
- Build an adoption culture: Encourage experimentation, peer learning and recognition of progress.
- Make learning easy: Provide role-specific training, quick-start guides and accessible support.
- Establish trust: Set clear rules, explain human oversight, and make it easy to verify results and report issues.
- Empower managers: Equip managers to model adoption, remove barriers and reinforce effective behaviors.
Finally, measure progress beyond licenses issued and training completed. Track how frequently employees use approved AI agents in their daily workflows, their confidence in using them, time saved and improvements in work quality. Where possible, compare these measures against a baseline to understand whether adoption is delivering meaningful results.
