Compassion International Data Automation Success

“The paid version did exactly what it was supposed to do.”
– Roy Moore

The Company

Founded in 1952, Compassion International is a humanitarian aid child sponsorship organization dedicated to the long-term development of children living in poverty. Headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the Christian charity assists children in 25 countries around the world, including Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, Haiti, and Kenya. To date, the organization has helped more than 2 million children. Despite all these successes, behind the scenes, Compassion International had a business problem.

The Challenge

Even though the scale of the effort was massive, the charity’s gifting process was not completely automated. Manual re-keying of information introduced duplicate data and costly errors. Duplicate data and mistakes resulted in inaccurate reporting to management. The gaps in automation made the entire process time consuming and cumbersome to manage. Compassion International representatives where required to access multiple applications to complete the giving process. This lack of information flow hurt the adoption of Salesforce, resulting in lost productivity and wasted license fees. Bad data even threatened to compromise management decisions.

Enter Roy Moore

Compassion International turned to a new hire, Roy Moore, to address these problems. Moore has an unusual background in that he trained to be a missionary, but after working for another Christian charity, he also found he had an aptitude for technology. Starting with database work, Moore was eventually tasked with supporting Salesforce. In time, he gained multiple Salesforce certifications and was exposed to Jitterbit at one of his previous employers.

The Solution

Compassion International was an existing Jitterbit Salesforce Data Loader customer. The non-profit used the tool to support many existing processes, from shipping out coffee mugs to sponsors to provisioning volunteers for fieldwork. Moore determined the company could automate many of their operations by switching to Jitterbit’s flagship product – the Harmony platform.

Moore did an analysis and estimated it would save about 500 staff hours a year in soft costs and about $10K in storage fees using Harmony. The storage savings were achieved by purging error logs in Salesforce by using Harmony instead of the Data Loader. In addition to saving time and money, Moore also justified the cost by pointing to the benefits of better data integrity, more frequent updating, and adding data validation to the integrations. Also, he anticipated less downtime thanks to Jitterbit support.

“As great as the free version of Data Loader is, the Harmony Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) will allow us to do even more complicated things, more robust things, and more solid things.”
– Roy Moore

The Results

Automating the processing meant that employees no longer had to spend time cutting and pasting information from one system into another. Worker satisfaction was improved along with the quality of the data. In the end, Harmony has been paying for itself even faster than Moore expected.

“We have only scratched the surface with Jitterbit Harmony, and I know it can do a lot more and am looking forward to getting to know it better.”
– Roy Moore
