Count Down To Dreamforce 2008 | The End Of IT As We Know It
Posted By Larry Dyson, Director of Services, October 1st, 2008
I'm certainly not the first person to profess the idea that IT is doomed because of its own bad decisions and failure to deliver measurable value to the business for the last 10 plus years. But this is a reality that is hitting home to more and more companies.
Some of the research I have read says that IT will be up to 20% smaller in the next couple of years. I think that is conservative. I believe that IT will cease to exist as a significant entity in many companies where technology is not the core competency of the business.
There are so many forces driving this idea towards reality, it would be hard to consider any other outcome. Here are a few reasons that I will discuss in future blogs:
- The IT organization and IT professionals refusing to change
- The old school IT cost model
- The island mentality
Don't get me wrong, large companies with multiple locations, multiple data centers and large staffing have enough people and enough stuff to warrant a C level executive to govern them. But, companies are circling the wagons around tight profit margins. As leaders focus the business on core competencies, they demand innovation and efficiency, and they will get it whether it comes from inside the company or outside. So, IT has a choice. Either get on the success train or go down with the sinking ship that is the information technology of the 90's.
I will be discussing the items above and other subjects over the next few weeks so stay tuned. See you at Dreamforce 2008.
