Jitterbit VMWare Appliance

Postby catwood2 on Thu Oct 26, 2006 8:31 am

I'd like to suggest a Jitterbit VMWare appliance be built. I have recently begun using VMWare and would build one myself if I had the utility (I just use the freebie VMWare) and technical knowledge of VMWare and Jitterbit.

Since Jitterbit can run on linux and the other supporting components are all open source - this could be done for very low co$t. Well, at least I understand the appliance builder license fee is pretty low...and, of course, there is a price to be put on time. I am fairly certain that the end result would be more exposure for jitterbit...hey - the beauty of the appliance is that it's all preconfigured - no massive install/configuration for the curious. The user experience would be:
1. Dowload Jitterbit appliance.
2. Run appliance.
3. See Jitterbit in action with some pre-configured operations.
4. Run virtual jitterbit server in production?

I bet there are people in the community with the requisite skillset. I'm probably not one....but, hey, I'd do documentation for it.

Hi,

this is a good suggestion and something we will probably do, time permitting. We have started to use VMWare for testing with good results and releasing a Jitterbit "appliance" this way would certainly be possible. The only problem is the size of the virtual machine, a restricted install of FC3 with the gnome desktop runs up to 1 GB, so how would it be distributed? We are considering building a minimal version of Linux without a UI with just the server and support libraries installed. Any thoughts?

/Cheers

Hi Emmanuel,

I think the best way to proceed is to use rPath (http://www.rpath.com) to make this kind of appliance. They did an amazing job with SugarCRM for example, it is only 123 MB :D. Using rPath, you can generate appliances for both VMware, Xen or ISO disks. You should give it a try or contact rPath, I'm sure they will help you

Hope this helps

Cheers
